Narsingdi


Narsingdi District (dhaka division) with an area of 1140.76 sq km, is bounded bykishoreganj district on the north, narayanganj and brahmanbaria districts on the south, Brahmanbaria and Kishoreganj districts on the east, gazipur district on the west. Annual average temperature: maximum 36°C, minimum 12.7°C; annual rainfall 2376 mm. Main rivers are Meghna, Arial Khan, Haridhoa, Kalagachhia and Paharia. There are high hills with red soil on the northern region of the district.
Narsingdi (Town) consists of 9 wards and 33 mahallas. The area of the town is 14.76 sq km. Narsingdi municipality was established in 1972. The town has a population of 42023; male 54.52%, female 45.48%; density of population per sq km is 2847. Literacy rate among the town people is 51.6%.

Administration Narsingdi district was a subdivision under greater Dhaka district and was turned into a district in 1984. The district consists of 6 upazilas, 3 municipalities, 27 wards, 55 mahallas, 69 union parishads, 652 mouzas, 1060 villages. The upazilas are belabomonohardishibpurraipurapalash and narsingdi sadar.
Archaeological heritage and relics Silver coin discovered at Wari Batteshwar village (c third century AD), imitated gold coin (c. eighth century AD) discovered at village Wari, stone image (Sena period) found at Narsingdi town, silver coin of Gias Uddin Azam Shah at Algi village, silver coin (Sultani period) at Panchdona, three domed mosque (1524) at Ashrafpur, single domed mosque (eighteenth century) and tomb of Shah Monsur at Kumardi, two copper plate inscriptions (seventeenth century) found at village Ashraffpur, Bibi Joynab Mosque (1719), Parulia Mosque (1716), Raghunath Mandir (c seventeenth century).
Historical events During the mass upsurge in 1969 three persons were killed and many wounded on 29 December when police fired indiscriminately on procession at Hatirdia Bazar (Monohardi).

Population 1891281; male 50.77%, female 49.23%; Muslim 93.28%, Hindu 6.40%, Christian 0.03%, Buddhist 0.03%, ethnic nationals 0.11% and others 0.15%.

Hats, bazars and fairs Hats and bazars are 121, most noted of which are Nardingdi Bazar, Shekherchar Bazar; Baul Mela (Narsingdi) is also notable.
Main exports Paddy, bamboo, pineapple, guava, vegetables, lungishari, fertiliser.
NGO activities Operationally important NGOs are bracasagrameen bank, SAS, Red Crescent, BAVS, Prabaha, Samaj Sangstha, Dipyaman Narsingdi and Marie Stopes.
